September appeared in yellow in his familiar melancholy style, taking the place of the reveler August.
We are putting swimming suits and towels back in our suitcase before heading back home.
Lefkada enchanted us with its beauty, the Ionian Sea painted our soul blue, beaches are deserted.
Only the waves are left to erase our messages in the sand.
But our suitcase is not closed yet because it is waiting for the goodies of Lefkada that should definitely a visitor take with him, when leaving the island.
And what are these?
Except the established ones (some sand, some pebbles) we will take with us
some uniquely delicious local products to get a taste of Lefkada with us.
So we will get wonderful “cut” Egluvi lentils. Unique in taste.
Necessarily accompanied by Lefkadas cooking recipe. Probably you tasted it at the Feast of Lentils,
in August on the mount of Agios Donatos where are growing or in some of the tavernas in Eglouvi
and it certainly did not leave you unmoved.
You will find it in selected places in the city and directly in the producers of Egluvi.
You will get crispy, delicious oil rolls that will uniquely accompany your
coffee or any hot drink you like, later in the first cold weather of autumn but also plain or with honey or cheese.
Typical treat of Lefkada, you can find it in every bakery on the island and they are conservated for a long time.
You will get ladopita (oil pie), the dessert for every occasion on the island.
It was a treat on festive days, in mysteries of life and death but also the cake at New Years Eve.
It is also called “chousmeree”. Oil, sugar and flour are the simple basics ingredients that mixed well to give this wonderful pie.
Easily someone can confuse it with halva, but it is not even reminiscent of its taste.
You will find it in bakeries on the island and in selected places in the city of Lefkada.
You will get the ultimate appetizer for tsipouro or ouzo, salami and Lefkada sausages, directly from local producers.
Known all over Greece, we also meet it in supermarkets, but definitely their taste when you get them fresh from the local ones crafts is completely amazing.
You will get Lefkadian honey. The south of the island is famous for this.
Local producers are selling honey and its products in many places as in Komilio, Dragano, Athani and other.
You can also get wine, the famous varzami (there are quite a few Lefkada wineries) but also oil from local producers (some awarded).
Beyond the taste, you can find wonderful handicraft products or even jewelry with the unique karsan stitch,
an embroidery stitch that hides a unique story behind it after it was inspired and spread by a disabled woman in her two hands.
So if your suitcase is filled with all these, then it will accept to close and will allow you to return in everyday life,
but full of beautiful experiences that will have satiated all your senses.
