Spring smiles at Lefkada and Lefkada at spring.
May Day arrived and the month of flowers, May and a lush green carpet decorated with every color imaginable,
was laid on the plains, on the slopes of the mountains, next to the sea, in every humble garden of the villages and the town of the island.
The countryside of Lefkada is bursting with beautiful wild flowers that bloom just like that,
without effort, with the touch of the creator and give us unique images.
They smell of the aromatic herbs, the fragrant bushes, the flowering trees.
The flora of Lefkada is uniquely rich.
It is no coincidence that books of folklore
describe infinite healing properties of plants that cured wounds and diseases of humans and animals.
We, perhaps as younger people and people of the office and sedentary work,
cannot feel through these little sprouts the power of the earth, of nature,
we may not know much about these properties, but we remain speechless from the beauty, the colors and their aromas.
The title of the queen of wildflowers on the island is firmly held by the beautiful peony, an amazing flower that grows mainly in areas of the central and southwestern side of Lefkada in the mountains of the villages of Karia, Egluvi, Hortato, and Alatrou.
Its name changes from village to village. We find it “votani tis Panagias” or “kukko”, or “glykostamno” and/or “paparouna”.
The word “peonia” owes its name to the God of doctors Peonio,
who used this herb to heal the wounds of the God Ares every time he returned from the battles.
Its beauty and grace are rivaled equally by orchids.
In many species, strange forms and unique colors, orchids are found in several semi-mountainous and mountainous locations in the central mainland and resemble little fairies in the foliage, ready to fly.
But without falling behind in beauty and fragrance, other simple and ordinary wild flowers,
such as geraniums, poppies, daisies, anemones, thyme, spartum and dozens of others,
in hundreds of shades, with strange shapes in the petals and leaves smell of musk and beautify the nature of the island.
Even next to the waves, on the beaches of the island, the flowers are a pleasant surprise.
First and best is Arenaria Leukadia, an endemic plant that grows in Lefkada’s sand of the beaches and keeps the lilies and poppies company.
Whether or not you enjoy studying herbs and wildflowers, you’re sure to relax as you walk among them.
Spring and its blooming nature makes sure to keep your senses alert, because beauty is everywhere.
